The letter takes up Pope Francis' concern about the globalisation of indifference which "makes us slowly inured to the suffering of others and closed in on ourselves"and reflects on the need for a culture of inclusion. It ends with a call to work together to develop a culture of inclusion
"As people grounded in our own respective religious traditions and with shared convictions, may we, Hindus and Christians, join together with followers of other religions and with people of good will to foster a culture of inclusion for a just and peaceful society.
We wish you all a Happy Deepavali!"
and it is signed by Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, President of the PCID.
The letter has been sent out to Hindu communities in Scotland accompanied by a letter from Archbishop Mario Conti, Chair of the Bishops' Committee for Interreligious Dialogue. This letter reads:
It gives me great pleasure to send greetings and good wishes to you and all Hindus in Scotland as you celebrate the festival of Diwali.
As you are aware it is the tradition of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue to send you a message each year on this special feast and I am happy to enclose this letter with mine.
The letter’s theme is inclusion. It recognizes the increasing discrimination, violence and exclusion throughout the world. We are fortunate in Scotland that people of faith live in harmony with one another. However, it is true that violence in other parts of the world can have repercussions here and we are called upon to support our brothers and sisters of faith who share with us a common civic identity no matter what tensions exist elsewhere. The work of interfaith relations here in Scotland allows us to do this. The good relations that exist between us can bear witness to other nations that it is possible for people of faith to live together in peace and friendship. Let us continue this good work together for the good of our country and the world.
Once again, on behalf of my colleagues the Bishops of Scotland, on my own behalf and on behalf of our Committee for Interreligious Dialogue, I wish you and all Scottish Hindus a joyful festival of Diwali and every blessing in this coming year.
With all good wishes,
+ Mario Conti
Chair of the Committee for Inter Religious Dialogue of the Catholic Church in Scotland
