Archbishop Emeritus Mario Conti, who is the Chair of The Bishops’ Conference’s Committee for Interreligious Dialogue sent out a letter of greeting to all our Muslim contacts in Scotland. Below you will find his letter.
Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters,
I am delighted to be forwarding greetings for the holy month of Ramadan and the festival of Eid which come from Pope Francis and the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue in Rome. It is now fifty years since the Pontifical Council began sending these letters, hoping to establish good working relations and friendship between our two communities.
This year’s letter focuses on a theme very close to the heart of Pope Francis: caring for our common home. As human beings we all share a common home and as religious people we are called to care for this world by protecting the environment, recognizing its sacredness and living a simple lifestyle which helps us use the resources of this world wisely and responsibly. Your example of fasting and prayer during the holy month of Ramadan is a reminder to all of us that everything is a gift from God whose word alone sustains us. As God’s stewards and regents we know we have a duty to protect creation and treat it with respect.
The world we live in today is troubled in so many ways. It longs for peace and wholeness. May we Muslims and Christians by living out the ideals of our faiths contribute to the healing of the nations and by the growing friendship between us show that reconciliation and peace among religions is possible.
As you come to the end of Ramadan and celebrate the festival of Eid I send you my greetings on behalf of my colleagues the Bishops of Scotland and indeed the whole Catholic community in Scotland.
With all good wishes,
+ Mario Conti
